The Teaching Hospital Peradeniya is one of the prime tertiary care hospitals in the country, located along the Kandy  Colombo high way adjacent to the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. The Dental Hospital Peradeniya and Sirimavo Bandaranayaka Childrens Hospitals are located adjacent to the Hospital.

Peradeniya Hospital was donated by the Japanese Government to the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka in August 1980. Thereafter the Hospital was administered under the purview of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. All services of the Hospital are provide free of charge, in keeping with free health policy of the Government of Sri Lanka. The Dental Hospital Peradeniya falls under the administrative purview of the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya.

From the inception the Hospital functions as a secondary and tertiary Care Centre in the Central Province. We extend our specialized services to patients from North Central, North Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces.

We receive regular influx of Intern Medical Officers from the Ministry of Health for training. The School of Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) is located in the Hospital which is one of 3 such institutions in the Sri Lanka. Professorial Unit
The Teaching Hospital Peradeniya was donated by the Japanese Government with the objective of establishing a Teaching Centre for undergraduate students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

The Professorial Unit of the Hospital is composed of main Medical Specialties such as, Surgery, Paediatrics, Medicine, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Heamatology, Microbiology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Special Baby Unit, Toxicology and Neurology. Currently the Hospital provides training mainly for final year Medical Students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

The Professorial Unit has 43 Consultants that include outstanding Professionals in their respective field. This unit was served by eminent Professors and Senior Lectures in the past, and many were instrumental in bringing the Professorial Unit as well as the Hospital to the present level. Today there are 12 Professors, 23 Senior Lecturers and 8 Lectures serving in the Professorial Unit.

The Professorial Unit has achieved National and International recognition in many fields. Many Research studies are carried out by the Academic Staff as well as Undergraduate and Post Graduate Trainees attached to the unit.

Service Performance
The Teaching Hospital Peradeniya is a tertiary Care Hospital with a bed strength of about 900. The Hospital is treating annually about 70,000 to 80,000 patients in wards and about 350,000 patients at the Outpatient Department. About 300,000 patients receive Medical Care from Clinics conducted in the Hospital annually.

Our hospital provides services in relation to the main Medical disciplines; Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Neonatology, Toxicology, Neurology, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Hematology, Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine. We also have a fully equipped laboratory, two Premature Baby Care Unit, Preliminary Care Unit, Physiotherapy Unit, EEG and EMG services, ECG Department, Institutional Drugs Store and Dispensaries, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy Unit.
