Description
Sri Dalada viharaya – Madukanda was reputedly the fourth resting point Princess Hemamala & Prince Dantha on their journey of the sacred Buddha tooth relic from Mullaittivu to Anuradhapura during the 4th-century reign of King Mahsen.
The building of the temple has started in the era of King Dutugemunu’s General Nandimitra. This Vihara has water-cooled buildings. There are remains of the stone pillars of an ancient structure and the steps leading to it which have a balustrade and guard stone. Inside the image house, a damaged statue of a Buddha can be seen and there is another interesting structure made of rectangular stone-slabs thought to be a bathroom. Nearby in the jungle are the ruins of a stupa.
